David McKay
Principal
Bidwell Junior High School
As a 25+ year educator in Chico Unified, I’m proud to call Chico my home. My wife, Jill, who teaches at Pleasant Valley High School, and I couldn’t be more pleased with the education our three children have received in Chico Schools. I am blessed to have been able to walk the halls of Bidwell with my own three children when they attended here: they’re all BIG now, so cherish these times as they pass by faster than they might seem to be on those inevitable tough days. With such close ties to the school community, I am particularly passionate about Bidwell culture. I have less-than-fond memories of my own middle school experience growing up in the Bay Area, and I wake up every day striving to make the Bidwell experience totally different for each student who walks through our gates. Our school culture has a name: The Bidwell Way. The Bidwell Way is how we ALL treat each other in order to bring out the best in everyone--Safe, Responsible, Respectful. While we are the biggest junior high north of Sacramento with over 1,000 energetic kiddos, our Bidwell Team excels at connecting with students to create a personalized learning environment. Junior high can be a particularly stressful time for families. As a parent myself, I can tell you that your child IS physically and emotionally safe at Bidwell. If you ever feel like they are not safe, I need you to contact me right away. Call, text, email, come down in person -- whatever is best for you -- and we will develop a plan together to address your concerns. That’s my personal guarantee and commitment to you.
Stephanie Johnson
Assistant Principal
Bidwell Junior High School
It's an honor to step into the role of vice principal at a school that has been a significant part of my life. For the past 10 years, I've had the privilege of teaching here, and my connection to Bidwell goes back even further—I'm proud to say I'm a former student.
My husband, Tyler, a sergeant with the Chico PD, and I have been married for 14 years and have two children currently attending Shasta Elementary. Bidwell is not just a school to me; it's a community I am deeply committed to. I believe junior high is a pivotal time for students to discover their identity, and I am passionate about creating an environment where they can do just that.
My goal is to make Bidwell the best school it can be for both students and teachers by being a leader who celebrates successes and helps solve challenges. Our approach is built on a foundation of kindness and positive relationships, ensuring students feel supported both academically and personally. We are committed to the Bidwell Way: being safe, responsible, and respectful.
Parents, we are here to support you. Please don't hesitate to reach out to me directly with any concerns or questions at sjohnson@chicousd.net. Together, we can ensure every student thrives at Bidwell Junior High.
