The Math Department has an emphasis on problem solving which will benefit students throughout their lives.
Classes
include the basics of Seventh Grade math, followed by Math 8 which
presents the first half of a two-year algebra program. Students will
complete the second half as high school freshmen.
Accelerated
students who pass a math placement test before Seventh Grade may take
Algebra 1 in Grade Seven, which covers the two-year program in one year.
They then take Geometry in Grade Eight.
All classes meet the California Mathematics Content Standards for California Public Schools for Grades 7-8. |

 Classes Taught
ALGEBRA READINESS
Algebra
Readiness is designed to prepare students for Pre-Algebra. It is a
very important course in the preparation for higher mathematics. This
course covers all material outlined in the California Mathematics
Standards, it also reviews basic computational skills. Topics covered
include: integers, equations, graphing, probability, statistics, area
and perimeter, and exponents. To progress to Pre-Algebra, your son or
daughter must earn passing grades each quarter and pass the "Algebra
Readiness" exam and have his/her teacher's recommendation.
PRE-ALGEBRA
Pre-algebra
is designed to prepare students for Algebra. It is a very important
course in the preparation for higher mathematics. This course covers
all material outlined in the California Mathematics Standards, it also
reviews basic computational skills. Topics covered include: integers,
equations, graphing, probability, statistics, area and perimeter, and
exponents. To progress to Algebra 1, your son or daughter must earn
passing grades each quarter and pass the "Algebra Readiness" exam and
have his/her teacher's recommendation.
ALGEBRA 1-P
Algebra
1 is the gateway course to higher mathematics. It is a fast-paced
course whose grade will count toward college entrance requirements.
Topics covered include: writing and solving algebraic equations; area
and perimeter with algebraic applications; review of the distributive
property and integer operations; numeric, algebraic, and geometric
ratios; graphing linear equations using slope and intercept; solving
systems of equations and quadratic functions. Upon satisfactory
completion of Algebra 1-P (grade of C or better) the students will go to
Geometry the following year.
GEOMETRY
Geometry
is offered for those students who have successfully completed Algebra
1-P in 7th grade. The textbook used [College Preparatory Mathematics
(CPM) Math 2] is the same text that is used at the high schools in the
Chico Unified School District. The geometry skills and concepts
developed in this discipline are useful to all students. Aside from
learning these skills and concepts, students will develop their ability
to construct formal, logical arguments and proofs in geometric settings
and problems.
